Due to the many seeds found in pomegranate fruits, they were considered a symbol of fertility by the ancient cultures of Egypt, Greece and Rome.  The Greek writer, Homer, wrote about the growing pomegranate in Syracuse on the island of Sicily.  There are many references to pomegranates, and the image of the fruit was used extensively in the moldings and stone sculptures found in the Temple of Jerusalem in Solomon.

Pomegranate, ica punica granatum ', are native shrubs and trees found throughout the Middle East and most of Europe.

Pomegranates appear to be the major landscape trees growing along the roadsides in Albania, Montenegro, Bulgaria, and many parts of Turkey.  Pomegranate trees appeared in Spain around 800AD by Moors.  Grenada, Spain, on the Mediterranean coast, got its name from the Latin name of pomegranate, um panica granatum.  The French named the Latinized ica virtue granatum, the new explosive weapon after the pomegranate, the hand grenade, as the impact of the weapon disintegrated many small pieces of metal such as several seeds of the pomegranate fruit.

Largely cultivated in Spain, pomegranates migrated with missionaries to Mexico, California and Arizona in the 16th century.  In America, pomegranate trees were introduced in California in the mid-1700s by Spanish missionaries.  Pomegranate fruits are ruby-red fruits that are about 2 to 6 inches in diameter.  They resemble small apples, and take the French word, 'pom,' meaning apple.  There are many seeds of fruits, which are green in color from pink to red, juicy pulp which is the edible part.  The pulp is cooking something to taste.

Pomegranate, ica punica granatum ', are dense, shrubby shrubs that are approximately twelve feet tall with thorny, slender branches that can be trained in small trees.  Orangish flowers appear on new growth in spring and summer and are vine-shaped and vase-shaped.  Vase-shaped flowers are normally sterile, so they will not develop into fruit.  The fruit has many seeds covered with leather, brown to red, bitter skin surrounded by sweet, pink, juicy, savory pulps, which are easily peeled.  Pomegranate juice stains can be difficult to remove from clothing.  This juice was used as an ink or dye by the ancients, because of its persistence in permanently staining.  The thick skin around the pomegranate is high in tannins, and the ancestors dried the skins and made products such as leather;  Thick skin gives the fruit a long shelf life, lasting two months when it is cold.

When trained as a tree, the pomegranate progresses to the habit of a shrub with many blossoms originating from the root and crown area.  Tree-type plants can be produced by allowing only one trunk to grow.  Additionally suckers can often be removed around the main trunk.

Pomegranate trees self-pollinate.  Severe fruit fall is not uncommon during the juvenile period( almost three yrs) of the plant.  Fruit fall is done in favor of leaf growth such as fertilization and more watering.  Avoid planting young plants under stressful conditions.  Mature trees set and hold fruits better than smaller trees.

Mature pomegranate trees develop a thick bark, which is cold hardy to test at temperatures in Georgia and experienced zero degrees Fahrenheit in January of 1984.  Younger shrubs and pomegranate bark trees are thin bark that do not show high survival rates at low temperatures.  , But the plant can be regenerated from the roots in the spring.  Light annual pruning of established trees encourages the development of good quality fruits.  Excessive or late application of fertilizer delays maturation of the fruit and will reduce color and quality.

Commercial pomegranate production of pomegranate is mostly concentrated in California, and the fruit begins to appear in eastern markets in mid-October, just in time for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.

As, picking wild butterflies from a childhood vineyard, it is an experience that children always remember - fulfilling days of fun and joy during childhood.  A century ago, every farmer had a pomegranate plant in his house which he used to grow from a seed.  Some of these plants grew in bushes and some in trees.

The fruit is strange in appearance and when opened with a knife, it also seems strange to see hundreds of juicy red, individual pulp fruits, each with a removable seed.

Pomegranate juice is one of nature's most powerful antioxidants.  Pom Wonderful Pomegranate juice has more naturally antioxidant power than any other beverage, including red wine, green tea, blueberry juice, and cranberry juice.  Antioxidants help protect your body from free radicals;  Molecules that can cause premature aging, heart disease, Alzheimer's, even cancer.  Drink a glass today!  Researchers have shown that people who drink 2 ounces of pomegranate juice daily for a week increase their body's antioxidant activity by up to 9% in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Another study (November 2003) showed that pomegranate extracts would fight skin cancer at an American Association for Cancer Research conference.

The pomegranate crop is expected to be the largest in 2006, because of the publicity and enthusiasm generated by the news of the spectacular health improvement, drinking only two oz can be expected.  Pomegranate juice, according to the Pomegranate Council, located in San Francisco, California, every day.
